ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Throughout the years, I always knew that I could count on the love and support of my family. I was never once pushed to do or become what my parents wanted me to do or become. Instead, I was given room and the freedom to develop my own authenticity and to pick and choose my own paths in life. Even when my choices didn’t make much sense to anyone else but me, the love and support of my family never waived.
Over the years and the decades, I made tons of mistakes; some were grave, others were casual, but not once was I ever scolded for making bad decisions or choices. I was never put down with words or actions by the people who were taking care of me. Yes, I’ve been through my own share of demeaning slurs, debasing insults and negative labels hurled my way, but never from my own family; and when you have a safe, peaceful home to come back to at the end of the day, nothing anyone says out there really matters.
I’m sure there were hundreds of times when my mom thought I was just plain stupid given some of the choices I made…but she never told me so. I have always felt the courage to pursue my goals and dreams anyway and anywhere I chose because I knew deep down in my heart that if things fell apart…which they did more times than I can count, that my family was there to help me pick up the pieces and try again.
That kind of unconditional love, support and acceptance is what I wish for every child who is here on this planet and every child that will ever have this wonderful, magical, sometimes tragic, awful beautiful experience of being human.
